Looking for wedding photos? I have posted those to Flickr instead of here.
This is the site of our wedding on May 29. It will be at the Wilson Vineyards in Clarksburg, California. This is just south of Sacramento. Visit the wedding website (http://chrisandsteph.weddings.com) for more information.
It's taken a long time, but at long last, here are the pictures of my car seat upholstery project! Two years ago, I decided to reupholster the seats of my 1961 Mercury Comet. The old seats were original 42-year-old material, and they were disgusting and falling apart. The previous owner was kind enough to include blankets with the car to cover the seats so they could be safely sat upon. With professional upholtering jobs costing over $1000, I thought I would put my 7th-grade home economics class to good use and re-make the seat covers from scratch. It ended up costing about $500 anyway, but the experience was a lot of fun.

I'm quite proud of my Halloween costume this year, even though I didn't think of the idea myself (thanks, internet!). I went as the famous surreal painting “Son of Man” by Magritte.

[by Steph] I swear I went to the other side of the world last summer, and here's the proof! I was invited to participate in a World Music Workshop in Bali and met all of these fine lovely folks! The workshop was 3 weeks long, and culminated in a festival, which featured rare music forms from all over Bali, as well as us (!) performing what we had absorbed over the last few weeks. After everyone left, I hung out for a week on my own to see the sights.

I was in San Francisco for TypeCon on July 21-25, and snapped these photos of the lovely city along the way. I’m a big fan of San Francisco, and it’s too bad that I spent the entire five days and six nights I was there in one square mile of the city around the conference, except for a couple of conference-related trips. I really have to explore the non-Financial District neighborhoods in more detail.
Nonetheless, here is my Hotel Nikko-centric view of San Francisco on this trip.
Well, this was it: my first TypeCon and my first “real” type convention since I started working at MyFonts five years ago. Yes, I went to AtypI in 1999 in Boston, but I had only been working at MyFonts for a month and knew even less about type than the still rather measly amount I do now.
(I also took a bunch of pictures of beautiful San Francisco which I decided to separate from the TypeCon pictures so that the hardcore font types wouldn’t have to deal with a diluted experience.)
These are but a drop in grand metaphorical ocean of fine pictures that were taken at the event. I usually forgot to take my camera with me, so my pickings are slimmer than some of these others’:
Steph and I were invited to New Mexico to visit Vivien with Nik for a few days. We flew in to Albequerque, shuttled to Santa Fe, saw the extremely cultured sights in Santa Fe, then went to Los Alamos and camped near Jemez Falls to the west. We found possibly the most perfect hot springs ever and learned the ins and outs of living in an RV.

I haven't been to Seattle in the summertime since Dan and Shannon got married, and I was beginning to miss the brighter side of the Emerald City. Also, it has somehow managed to snow every time Steph has visited Seattle since 1997, so I was having a hard time convincing her that the weather can actually be quite beautiful there! So, we decided to take a nice June vacation this year to the city of my youth, complete with romantic train ride and a stop in Thousand Oaks, California to visit Steph's father for a couple of days.
It all started well enough. The train ride to Thousand Oaks was lovely and smooth, and we had a good time visiting the future dad-in-law (you heard it here first)*. But the train troubles began the moment we arrived at the lovely Simi Valley train station. The train started 1 hour and 40 minutes late out of Los Angeles, which didn't bode well for the rest of the trip. Once we were finally on the train, things were going well until later in the day, when our train's tardiness began to snowball as we had to pull over and wait for one freight train after another to pass us. Since Amtrak doesn't own the tracks it runs on, all other trains always get the right of way. One thing after another stopped our train over the next 36 hours and we ended up arriving at Seattle at 3:30am, over seven hours late. We took a cab to Patrick's house and fell into bed.
Long story short: I love trains and the route of the Coast Starlight is very beautiful (see below!). But boy, passenger train service in this country is hopeless and needs to be re-planned from the ground up. Saddly, I expect that the automobile lobby won't let it get better.
*UPDATE: No, we're not really engaged yet. At this point it's common knowledge that I've wanted to marry Steph for years, but I haven't managed to beat down her independent streak enough yet to get her to agree. So although it's assumed by both of us that we will indeed get married someday, it's still unofficial at this point. Sorry.
Well, it's been a year and a quarter now since we first met our cat Frida (more commonly known as "kitty," "the cat," or (if you're Nik) "Fresca." In that 15 months or so, we have taken 73 photos of her, and I've been meaning for some time to post some of them here. Well, today, she did something truly crazy and so I decided now was the time.

The fires are still burning but the sky is lighter now than it was earlier today. Yesterday's photos were kind of eerily beautiful, but within a few hours of those, the sky filled up with orange-yellow smoke and it started to smell. Schools all over the country are closed today (Monday), including the universities, and employers have been urged to keep their employees home. Nevertheless, a lot of businesses seem to be open. Ash floats through the air and collects in corners, and the entire world is lit with a sickly yellow light. As your eyes get used to the coloring, white lights begin to look distinctly blue. Green trees and grass leap out from the drab backgrounds.

We woke up this morning to an orange sky and an even oranger sun. The scene is spooky, and the southern horizon is brilliant blue, as if the smoke doesn't want to bother Mexico. As I write this, the smoke ceiling is spreading and deepening. I snapped these photos quickly to give a sense of the scene.
Update: More photos from later in the day and tomorrow.
We went camping this weekend with Nik and Vivien at the San Jacinto State Park in the southern California desert mountains. The campsite was in the town of Idyllwild, east of Los Angeles and Riverside. We made a very busy 24 hours out of it!

This is it, where the money rolls in as thousands of people come to buy fonts. The MyFonts web site is hosted here at a Hosting.com facility in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Kevin and I have spent many hours here tending to our machine overlords. It's loud, sterile, and 68 degrees Fahrenheit all the time.
Update: Several months ago we moved our stuff to another facility, so these pictures aren't accurate anymore. Kevin's taken pictures of the new InterNAP facility which perhaps I'll post sometime.
Kevin Woodward and Jennifer Wolf got married in Scottsville, Virginia on June 21, 2003. It was a lovely weekend in a lovely state, and Steph and I accompanied my boss, John Collins, and his wife to two nights of wedding festivities. Steph and I agree that this was the most fun we've ever had at a wedding. Many congratulations to Kevin and Jen, and hello to the terrific people we met this weekend!

I walked across town from dinner at MIT to where I'm staying near Coolidge Corner, and the atmosphere had a spooky cloudy red look to it. There was a game on at Fenway and lots of moving traffic, making for a scene with many possibilities. I decided to try out the long-exposure capabilities of my camera, which I haven't used before. If the opportunity presents itself I might take more as the trip progresses. These are less than three hours old!
Note, these pictures might be extra dark on PCs, so you might want to turn up your brightness.

I've been meaning to take pictures of our house and neighborhood ever since I got this camera, and now I've finally gotten around to it! It's been a beautiful weekend ? perfect weather for outdoor pictures. So here you go, slavish devotees of my boring life...

Steph and I drove to Pasadena for the last two weekends to help Nik and Vivien fix up their newly-purchased condominium for a summer renter. We learned a lot about whacko electrical wiring, GDFI outlets, studs, and how three-way light switches work.

For spring break, Steph drove to Socorro, New Mexico to visit her friend Suzanne, whom she met back in Fair Isaac days in the Bay Area.

These are pictures from Jim Marvin's 25th Anniversary Concert on March 7, 2003. It was a terrific concert in front of a sold-out house in Sanders Theatre.

I traveled to Boston for the first week of March, and my trip happily coincided with a lovely gathering at the residence of Adam and Angharad. I flew in at 4:55pm and the wine was flowing by 8:00. If only this happened whenever I travelled somewhere!
I also took a few pictures of favorite spots when I happened by them.
This was the San Diego anti-war protest in February. We wandered downtown to see if there would be anything interesting going on. I was impressed by the few thousand people that were supposedly there... that is, until I got home and heard there were a million people out in London! Nonetheless, I'm not one who frequents political protests, so it was an interesting day out for me.
